critical reads

The Body Keeps the Score

This book provides foundational knowledge on trauma and how the effects are stored in our bodies. A must-read for therapists, social workers, educators, and anyone working with people dealing with people who have experienced trauma.

The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog

Dr. Perry takes us through a series of cases he has worked with, and provides a wonderful mix of brain science and practical application. Another must-read.

My Grandmother's Hands

This book is an amazing journey through how trauma is stored, processed, and how we can heal from it. I highly recommend reading it slowly and taking the experiential parts seriously.

Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle

This book is a game changer for understanding stress and how it impacts our lives. The authors also give practical strategies for moving that stress through our systems.

What happened to you?

One of the best books on trauma I've ever read, and it's because of 1) the logical and practical layout, and 2) the amazing way Dr. Perry and Oprah complement one another. I highly recommend getting the audio version as a companion. The authors narrate, and Oprah uses clips from previous interviews to highlight points from the book.

The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom

A wonderful resource for educators. Filled with practical things you can do in school to become more trauma-informed.

Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?

A necessary read for educators. This book helps us see the historical impact of race and how it shaped educational policies, practices, and current state of being.

Fostering Resilient Learners

Another wonderful resource for educators. I pull a lot of examples from this book when I'm doing trainings.

Pushout: The criminalization of Black girls in schools

We're familiar with the struggle of Black males in the school system, but Black girls often get left out of the conversation. I highly recommend this book, and it's great to use as a book study for your school!

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness

A must-read if you are doing Mindfulness in your school. I recommend reading this prior to any implementation, as the author discusses how Mindfulness implemented without proper care has the potential to cause harm.

The Whole-Brain Child

Great book for parents, educators, or anyone interacting with kids!

For everyone

Brene Brown

Seriously-anything by Brene Brown. She's simply a treasure and I guarantee you'll grow from reading her work. My personal favorites are Daring Greatly and Dare to Lead.

Buddha's Brain

Wonderful, scientific explanation of the benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation.

Say what you mean: A mindful approach to nonviolent communication

This is one of the most practical, life-changing books I've read. You will develop amazing listening and communication strategies.
